This is a man-made pond that dates from the mid-1700s. It was the site of an early grist mill and is named for John Squire Lord who owned it in the 1840s.
In 1880 Archibald and Philip Lord operated grist, saw and shingle mills here. Charles Ives bought the mill in 1913 and added a small electric power plant.
