Prince Edward Island Tourism Region : Points East Coastal Drive
Description From Owner:
- Toponymysts have had a heck of a time with this place name. Tradition has it that a scaffold was found here with either a dog or a man hanged by sailors.
- One historian declared a man had hanged himself here by his suspenders or 'galluses.' Another claim is that a man was hanged here for murder or that trees on the point appeared to sailors as gallows.
- In 1765 Holland marked the place on his charts as Orwell Point which later maps and charts put on the next point E which is Mutchs Point.
- By 1846 the name was Gallows Point and then Musik for Loyalist settler Peter Musick. For a time it was Tweedys Point for Joseph Tweedy who lived here.
- The most logical name source would appear to be Michel Haché Gallant who settled at Port La Joie in 1720 or Pierre Galloa who is shown in the 1875 census as a settler at nearby Pisquid River who had lived in the area for 30 years.
