Description From Owner:
  • The point extends into Northumberland Strait. The name honours the long career of Joseph Frederick Wallet Des Barres (1721-1824). He was an army officer, surveyor, military engineer, artist and colonial administrator.
  • He served as Lt. Gov. of Cape Breton 1784-7 and governor of PEI 1804-12. His greatest contribution was in the field of toponymy with The Atlantic Neptune, published between 1774 and 1784.
  • It consisted of four series of charts that covered Nova Scotia, the Gulf of St. Lawrence and PEI.
  • He also amassed huge land holdings totalling 32,000 hectares (80,000 acres) in parcels located at Falmouth, Tatamagouche, Minudie and Maccan in Nova Scotia, and at Petitcodiac in NB.
  • With permission from 'Prince Edward Island Place Names' David E. Scott 2011
