  • Cyril “Joe” O’Brien

    Harness racing legend

He's been called the greatest driver and trainer of harness horses the world has ever known.

Joe O'Brien (1917-1984) of Alberton won his first race at the Summerside track at the age of 16 with a horse called Mickey Mouse. He went on to win another 4,284 races with money earnings of $20.4 million.

He was the sport's first million dollar winner who went more than 62 races without ever placing below second place. He won the Kentucky Futurity five times, the Hambletonian twice and the Little Brown Jug twice.

Horsemen said of O'Brien that no driver in history ever had a greater sense of timing and knowledge of how much horse he had left.

They said he "drove like he had a stop watch in his head." O'Brien left PEI in 1947 for the greener pastures of the U.S.
