- Town incorporated 1910. P.O. c1830 1867 and from 1967; P.O. Souris East 1867-1967. Named New Bristol by John Cambridge in 1820. Formerly known as Souris East, New Bristol, Grand Haven, Mouse Harbour, Red Cliffs and Colville Bay.
- Although PEI is now connected to mainland Canada by the Confederation Bridge, two ferry services still operate from the Island. One runs between Woods Island and Caribou, NS between May and December.
- The other makes a five-hour crossing from Souris to Grindstone in the Magdalen Islands of Quebec from April to January.
- Nicolas Bellin shows this place on his 1744 map as havre à la Souris, 'Mouse Harbour.' This was likely due to an infestation of mice.
- In 1910 the town was incorporated as Souris, 'Mouse.
