Prince Edward Island Tourism Region : Points East Coastal Drive
Description From Owner:
- Village incorporated 1953 in Lot 37. P.O. from c1867. Named for John Stewart (1758-1834) who founded the village in the early 1800s. He wrote 'Account of Prince Edward Island' in 1806.
- In 1789 John Stewart (1758-1834) built a house which he called Mount Stewart on a height of land overlooking the river.
- He had immigrated to the island as a teenager and soon acquired the nick-name 'Hell-fire Jack,' because of his public harassment of opponents, numerous intrigues and occasional duels.
- He was elected to the Assembly and was Speaker from 1795-98 and 1824-30.
- In 1806 he became the Island's first historian and promoter of the Island's economic potential by publishing 'Account of Prince Edward Island'.
- The Discovery Museum and Hillsborough River Eco-Centre here features the cultural and natural history of the Hillsborough, the Island's Canadian Heritage River.
- It's at 104 Main St., Rte. 22 off Route 2 at the hub of the Confederation Trail. Open 10-6 July through Aug., with reduced hours in spring and fall.
