Prince Edward Island Tourism Region : Red Sands Shore
Description From Owner:
- Village incorporated 1950 in Lot 29. From the French name of Westmoreland River, rivière aux Crapauds, 'river of toads'. Noted in JHA in 1832. P.O. from 1857. Locally pronounced 'kra-po'.
- Crapaud is French for toad but Crapaud de mer is the name of a particularly ugly fish with poisonous spines found in abundance in the St. Lawrence River and its Gulf.
- Myoxocephalus scorpius is also called Scorpionfish or Shorthorn Sculpin so it is this fish to which the name clearly refers and not the eel fish which in French is anguille.
