Village incorporated 1966, 4 mi W of Charlottetown in Lot 32. School district 1849. P.O. from 1859. Probably named for Cornwall, England. Formerly called Pye's Corner
In 1995 the communities of Cornwall, Eliot River and North River were amalgamated to form the Town of Cornwall.
In that year a plebiscite was held to select one of the following names for the new town: Cornwall, Fairfield and Westwood. Cornwall got 86% of the votes.
