PEI does not have a federal penitentiary, so in 2010 the Provincial Correctional Centre nicknamed 'Sleepy Hollow,' was expanded by 48 beds to 143 beds, easing over-capacity that had been a problem for some time.
The $3 million addition houses offenders deemed low-risk who serve intermittent or weekend sentences. Islanders whose convictions merit penitentiary terms are usually housed in New Brunswick's Dalhousie Penitentiary.
