  • Catherine Callbeck

  • Catherine Callbeck (1939-) first entered politics in 1974 when she was elected to the Legislative Assembly.

She served as Minister of Health & Social Services and Minister Responsible for the Disabled until 1978 when she returned to the family business, Callbeck's Store at Central Bedeque.

In 1988 she was elected MP for Malpeque and in 1993 elected leader of PEI's Liberal Party and that year became the first woman in Canada elected a provincial premier.

She retired in 1996 and returned to the family business but in 1997 was called to the Senate of Canada.

In 2010 as a member of the Senate's national finance committee, she advocated scrapping the penny, arguing that the annual production of 800 million of them was creating a loss to taxpayers of $25 million.
