3212 EAST POINT RD |
Prince Edward Island Tourism Region : Points East Coastal Drive
Description From Owner:
- 11 mi NE of Souris in Lot 47. Named by George B. McEachern in 1872 for Elmira, New York.
- It was selected for its euphony. Formerly called Portage because it was on the route from North Lake to South Lake. P.O. from 1844. Almira Road noted in Meacham 1880.
- The local railway station used to be the end of the line of the PEI Railroad and is now a part of the PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation.
- For those travelling east on the Island, Elmira Station used to be 'the end of the line.'
- Now it's a railway museum open June through September and visitors can take a ride on a miniature railway through wood lots and farmland on abandoned rail lines.
- The railroad's history is chronicled in photo displays, maps and artifacts including the station, station master's office and the waiting rooms: the station had one for men and one for women.
