Elmer Blaney Harris
American founded Island artist colony
He was an American playwright, author and dramatist and in 1908 he founded an artist colony at Fortune Bridge, PEI.
Elmer Harris (1878- 1966) gained a patron when the mother of William Randolph Hearst saw him perform in a university theatre troupe.
Phoebe Apperson Hearst backed Harris through four years of theatre study in New York and Europe after which he became a newspaper reporter, lecturer and free- lance writer.
His first artist colony was at Carmel-by-the-Sea in California but after his 1908 honeymoon he build a summer home on PEI and started another colony here.
He wrote seven original screen plays and collaborated on, adapted, directed or supervised 35 silent and sound films. The title character of his play Johnny Belinda was based on Lydia Dingwell (1852-1931) of Dingwells Mills.
