  • 5 mi SE of St. Peters in Lots 42 and 56. P.O. 1863-1913. School district Birch Hill before 1880
  • In the late 1800s the name applied to the local school section. The section of highway on which the community is located is known as Fortune Road since it runs between St. Peters Bay on the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Fortune Bay on Northumberland Strait.
  • The community is the birthplace of the Island's 'farmer poet,' Lawrence Doyle (1847-1907) who spent his entire life here.

  • Lawrence Doyle

    He was raised by his widowed mother on a Fortune Road farm near Farmington, SE of St. Peters and became a farmer, office holder and popular song writer.

    Lawrence Doyle (1847-1907) acquired the nick-name 'Farmer poet of the Island.'

    He learned carpentry and veterinary skills and helped neighbours draw up legal documents. For a time he was postmaster of Farmington.
