Prince Edward Island Tourism Region : Points East Coastal Drive
Description From Owner:
- Named by Samuel Holland 1765 George Town for George III (1738-1820). County seat of Kings County. Town incorporated 1912. P.O. from 1827. The port was called Three Rivers in the early 1800s.
- Georgetown Royalty was planned by Samuel Holland 1765 as one of the 70 territorial divisions of PEI.
- In 1820 Walter Johnstone wrote in Letters from Prince Edward Island:
- 'This is the best harbour on the Island. It has the greatest depth of water, easiest of entrance, the best shelter, earliest open in the spring, and latest shutting down in the fall...
- but (as yet) no man of property or enterprise has pitched his tent here so as to give the town and port a beginning, although it is certainly the most eligible situation on the island.
- In the very early 1800s the port was called Three Rivers. There are 15,000 annuals and hundreds of perennials on display in season at the 3.8-acre A. A. Macdonald Memorial Gardens in downtown Georgetown.
- The 60 colourful beds are framed by the 1886 Georgetown Court House and the 1839 Holy Trinity Anglican Church. The gardens are open May 1-Dec. 31
