Poisoned her six children
Little information about this tragedy is available, but Minnie (née Cassidy) McGee (1859-1951) was convicted after a trial in 1912 of fatally poisoning her 10-year-old son Johnny.
The trial was held in the Supreme Court of PEI in July and she was sentenced to be hanged in October. The jury recommended mercy since they believed she was insane and she was sentenced to life imprisonment at New Brunswick's Dorchester Penitentiary.
The 53-year-old woman was separated from her abusive, alcoholic husband at the time and told the court she poisoned the children because she was not feeling well.
She was tried only for killing Johnny, but also killed Louise, 13, Penzie, 12, Geordie, 8, Bridget, 6 and Thomas, 5. The children were killed by being forced to drink weak tea laced with the phosphorus from the tips of matches.
