Description From Owner:
- Flows SW into Orwell Bay. Lots 50 and 57. Named by Samuel Holland 1765 for Sir Edward Vernon (1723-1794), uncle of Lord Orwell; Vernon is famous for diluting spirits which was called grog because he wore a grogram coat.
- Grogram, originally gros gram (appeared in literature in 1562), is defined as a coarse, loosely woven fabric of silk, silk and mohair, or silk and wool.
- The word 'grog' in time came to refer to the sailors' daily rum ration and that tradition ended in 1970 for all Royal Navy ratings.
- The adjective gros means thick or coarse, originally from the Old French gros, itself derived from the Latin grossus. (Wikipedia)
- In Micmac Megoaseg gisna Megoesei Sipo (Pacifique 1934).
