- 13 mi SW of Montague in Belfast, Lot 58. Given c1881 probably for James Abraham Garfield (1831-1881), 20th president of the United States. P.O. c1882-1915.
- The area was settled by Scots and first known as Gairloch for a parish in Ross-shire, Scotland. In the 1870s the post office name was Selkirk Road.
- The present name was adopted in 1881 when James A. Garfield, 20th president of the United States, was assassinated after six months in office. The name Gairloch persisted for sometime after the official name change.
