Description From Owner:
  • Provincial park in Belfast, Lot 57.
  • The park is named for Thomas Douglas (1771-1820), 5th Earl of Selkirk. In 1792 he decided that the solution to the social and economic problems then besetting the Scottish Highlands, was emigration.
  • By 1803 he had bought a number of PEI properties and sent three ships, Dykes, Oughton and Polly with 800 settlers to the Island.
  • Most were from the Isle of Skye and others from Argyll, Inverness and Ross. For a time the area where they settled was known as the Selkirk Settlement.
  • With permission from 'Prince Edward Island Place Names' David E. Scott 2011
