Between Malpeque Bay and Gulf of St. Lawrence. Said to have been named for its shape (Greenhill 1967). Noted as Fish Island as early as 1821 and in Meacham 1880.
Map 1758 I. de Tentrec; Holland 1765, Billhook Sand, and notes 'The Fishery' on it; Bayfield 1850 and Douglas 1925 have Billhook Island. In Micmac Mimtoogopskeech, 'ball island'.
