Village incorporated 1956, 2 mi NW of Summerside. Said to be named for Eleanor Sanksey, Harry Compton's housekeeper. Compton's nephew, Hubert, claimed it was for Compton's daughter, but it would appear that her name was Charlotte.
It has also been noted that the place honours Queen Eleanor, wife of Richard the Lion Hearted. P.O. c1833-1962. County seat of Prince County 1833-1876.
