  • Michael

  • The Island's greatest distance runner

He didn't start running competitively until he was in his mid-twenties, but he started then with a vengeance.

Michael Thomas (1885-1954) of Lennox Island, a slightly built Mi'kmaq, launched his career by winning the 10-mile Charlottetown Patriot race in 1909, 1910 and 1911, and the Halifax Herald-Mail 10-Mile Road Race in 1910, 1911 and 1912.

In 1911 he tackled the Boston Marathon. An accident involving his accompanying cyclist meant he had to run most of the race without liquid refreshment, so he finished 26th, still with a better time than the winner from two years previous.

Thomas was forced to quit running because of arthritis. His achievements are commemorated in the Prince Edward Island Sports Hall of Fame at Summerside.
