Prince Edward Island Tourism Region : North Cape Coastal Drive
Description From Owner:
- Adjacent to Gulf of St. Lawrence, Lot 1.
- In 1847 Gesner wrote that the area was 'the resort of great numbers of the Walrus or sea-cow: hundreds of these animals were killed on the land by the early inhabitants, among whose descendents pieces of their skins still remain in use.
- A deep pond near Tignish is said to be filled with their bones, and their tusks of ivory are occasionally found on the shore, or in the forests.
- Only a few of those noble animals are now seen, and of their number, which is stated by the fishermen to be on the increase, none are captured'. Holland 1765 Otter Pond.
- The Mi'kmaq called it Bastogobajit Waakade, 'sea cow point' for the walrus which used to be numerous here. The walrus, or sea cow, now practically extinct, weighed up to 909 kg (2,000 pounds) and on land were clumsy and easy to kill.
- They measured up to 52 metres (18 feet) in length and had tusks like an elephant up to a metre (3 feet) in length.
