- The river flows NW into Cascumpec Bay and was named in 1765 by Samuel Holland for Henry Fox (1705-1744), 1st Baron Holland of Foxley.
- Fox held minor posts in the British civil service until he was elevated to the cabinet as secretary of state in 1755.
- He resigned the following year to become paymaster general, a position that allowed him to accumulate a large fortune.
