  • Bruce MacNaughton

  • Necessity Triumphs Again

Bruce MacNaughton knew that when you only have lemons you should make lemonade.

So when he had 200 pounds (90.9 kilos) of frozen strawberries left over from his failed restaurant business, he decided he'd better make strawberry preserves.

While he was cooking up the first batch a buddy dropped by and Bruce broke out the Grand Marnier. At some point after that he decided to add some of the Grand Marnier to the preserves... and the first batch of product for what was to become the Prince Edward Island Preserve Company was created.

That was in 1985 and the Preserve Company now sells more than 150,000 units of preserves annually.

Headquarters are now at New Glasgow in the restored 1913 butter factory. Visitors here in season can also have breakfast, lunch and supper in a 90-seat restaurant and wander through 2 kms of walking trails in the adjacent 12-acre water gardens.
