Description From Owner:
- The Island's most famous author
- One of the most lovable children in English literature was born on the pages of a book written in 1908 by Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874- 1942) of New London.
- The book was Anne of Green Gables and Anne was Anne Shirley, an 11-year-old orphan adopted into an Island family. The book follows the irrepressible freckled redhead through her school and childhood adventures.
- The book was her first and has sold 50 million copies around the world, inspiring many readers -- especially those in Japan where it is included in school curricula - to come to visit the place where the novel was set.
- Montgomery wrote nine books while living in Cavendish and in 1911 married Rev. Ewen Macdonald and moved to Leaskdale, ON where sons Chester and Stuart were born and where she published 11 more books.
- The fictional Anne, almost synonymous with the name PEI, has become a virtual industry.
- There are museums about Anne and Montgomery at Cavendish (a National Historic Site), Leaskdale, ON where she lived, Norval, ON where she lived for nine years and even Bala, ON where she went for a holiday in 1922.
- More than 90 companies are licensed to manufacture and sell Anne memorabilia, she appeared on two Canadian postage stamps and for a time was featured on the PEI licence plate.
- Montgomery wrote 20 novels, 500 short stories and a book of poetry. She was the first Canadian female to be made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in England and was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1935.
