  • The first people's bank in Canada

  • The Farmers' Bank of Rustico

has been variously described as: "The first people's bank in Canada;" "the smallest bank ever chartered in Canada (in terms of capital)" and "the precursor to the Credit Union movement.
It was incorporated in 1863 and chartered by the English government in 1864. It was the brainchild of Father Georges-Antoine Belcourt and his parishioners as a way to help address the perennial debt local farmers owed to merchants.

Today the handsome building is an interesting museum and National Historic Site open June through Sept., as is the adjacent Doucet House Museum, a log house built around 1772.
