Description From Owner:
- Named for Abbé Courtin, missionary to the Micmacs in the area 1731-1732. He was drowned returning to Louisbourg 1732.
- De la Roque 1752: 'To the west-south-west of the Ile aux Sauvages lies a second island, which had been granted to the late Monsieur Courtin, priest and missionary to the Indians, from which fact it bears the name of Ile à Monsieur Courtin'.
- Samuel Holland 1765 named it for Sir Thomas Charles Bunbury (1740-1821), first husband of Lady Sarah Lennox. Modern maps and charts call it Bunbury Island, with Courtin Island applied to one locally known as Little Courtin Island.
- Douglas 1925 makes this island lle aux Sauvages, but that may apply to Ram Island at the entrance to Malpeque Harbour; besides, Little Courtin Island is not WSW from Courtin Island, but is SE of it. In Micmac Gtijimenigog, 'chief island” (Pacifique 1934)
